Global Poker Index and Canadian Poker Tour Partner for 2014
GPI has been a trailblazer in creating a standardized, global poker-ranking system that has received international recognition and nearly unanimous approval within the industry as the best ranking of tournament poker players. Their formula for awarding points is a carefully protected secret, but it is said that this is only because they are waiting on a patent for the formula.
Players in CPT events across Canada will now be able to earn points based on the GPI formula and enter their ranking system. GPI and The Hendon Mob, a live poker player database acquired by GPI last year, has 300,000 player profiles in its system. CPT is immediately revamping their Player of the Year leaderboard to use the GPI points to determine the best player across all of the CPT events in one year.
Alexandre Dreyfus, CEO of The Hendon Mob and Global Poker Index, recognizes the Canadian presence in the international poker community.
"Since its inception, Canada has been one of the most dominant countries inside the GPI300. We know that Canadians are some of the most passionate poker fans in the world and so many of them play in live events across the country. With our commitment to have All Players – All In, with most open events on the live tournament circuit now qualifying for GPI Points, our partnership with the Canadian Poker Tour is a natural step in the right direction – best of luck to all players competing in the CPT PoY race!"
A spokesperson from CPT also added, "we are excited to be part of the Global Poker Index and give our players the opportunity to compete in a standardized ranking system both nationally and internationally."
As part of the new agreement, GPI will also be including CPT events on their popular Fantasy Poker Manager Facebook game. The game allows users to draft poker players before the start of an event and earn points based on their results. They can join leagues, compete against friends, and add an extra layer of excitement to watching poker tournaments by sweating the players they have on their roster. A CPT spokesperson said that "CPT will be using Fantasy Poker Manager to add another element of marketing to our events and give players the ability to add a new dynamic to their tournament experience. Fantasy Poker Manager has proven to be an engaging product and now players will have to opportunity to play it at major CPT events across the country."
The next CPT event is the Hard Rock Casino Vancouver Poker Championships in Coquitlam, BC from April 1st to 6th, followed by the greatly anticipated CPT Spring Showdown at Grey Eagle Casino in Calgary, Alberta the following week. PokerNews Canada will be on site at both events to provide our readers with running updates of the action.
