Jason Jung Wins the Calgary Stampede Poker Tournament
The first part of July in Calgary means it is Stampede time. And Stampede time means Deerfoot Inn & Casino is set to host their annual Stampede poker tournament. This summer marked the sixth-annual poker event from Deerfoot Inn & Casino to coincide with the Calgary Stampede.
While locals and out-of-towners flock to the Stampede grounds for live music from vaguely familiar rockers and country crooners, midway rides that will relocate your stomach to your throat and your heart to your groin, copious amounts of deep-fried treats, chuckwagon races, bull riding, and shoulder-to-shoulder crowds in relentless heat, the more reasonable ones among us would rather head to the air-conditioned poker room at Deerfoot Inn & Casino for a decently-structured poker tournament.
Mirroring the tournament-style rodeo at the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth, the Stampede poker tournament has nine days of “Wild Card Rounds” where players buy in for $185 for a one-in-seven chance of getting a seat in the Main Event. You can also buy in directly to the Main Event for $1,100, making the Wild Card Rounds essentially satellites, though it was not always this way and you used to have to enter the Main Event through the Wild Card Rounds.
The Main Event was held on Sunday, July 13, and the players received 20,000 chips to battle it out through 40-minute levels. The large number of satellite entries made this an especially juicy event, and 147 players participated in the action on Sunday.
The prize pool was set at just under $140,000 and was distributed to the last 15 players in the tournament. The top spot was worth $40,400 to go along with the gleaming belt buckle that is big enough to make plenty of real cowboys jealous.
When the last card hit the table, Jason Jung from Korea was the one to claim the title of champion. Jung has found plenty of success in sub-$300 tournaments in the past couple of years, and also cashed in this summer’s World Series of Poker Millionaire Maker. But his total live tournament earnings of $13,015 have been eclipsed by this $40K payday.
Here are the top 15 players who cashed the Stampede poker tournament:
|2||Zhun Rui Chen||$28,200|
|15||Jeff Lazala Babante||$2,000|
The next event from Deerfoot Inn & Casino is in early August when they present their Summer Super Stack with $400,000 in prizes guaranteed. It’s a 13-event series that will run from August 6 to 17 and the player who earns the most points across all of the events will also win a $5,000 World Poker Tour Montreal package. The $1,500 Main Event boasts three starting days, 30,000 chips, and generous one-hour levels.
