The NHL Alumni Charity Poker Tournament Returns to Sportsnet NHL Alumni Charity Poker Tournament Sportsnet360

In winter in Canada, our thoughts always turn to hockey. With the Canadian Juniors reigning the world after a 5-4 victory over Russia and the NHL season in full swing, it’s the perfect time for Sportsnet to air the NHL Alumni Charity Poker Tournament.

The annual event pits online qualifiers against retired and current professional hockey players, as well as familiar faces from the poker world. Players compete to win money for the charity of their choice as well as a package to PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, which, coincidentally, also began today.

The tournament plays through a number of six-handed tables with the winners proceeding to a final table at the end. Each heat is an eclectic mix of poker professionals, hockey players, and online qualifiers, often leading to fun banter and interesting play.

The final table has $100,000 up for grabs, with the prize money being allocated to a charity chosen by each player. This interesting charity format allows everyone to support their own pet cause — often causes that have deep personal significance to them.

The first episode airs on Sportsnet360 today, January 6, at 8 p.m. ET, and the rest of the series will air over the coming weeks on Tuesdays and Sundays at the same time. Tune in to see the likes of Daniel Negreanu, Jonathan Duhamel, and Vanessa Rousso battle hockey legends like Wendel Clark and Denis Savard and three online qualifiers in this unique fusion of hockey and poker.
