The World Poker Tour (WPT) Bay 101 Shooting Star Main Event played down to a final table of six on Thursday, and one of those players is Canadian pro and Shooting Star Sorel Mizzi. Mizzi will be hunting for his first-ever open-event major live tournament win.
With almost $11,000,000 in career live tournament earnings, Mizzi has yet to find himself holding a major championship trophy. The serial high-roller winning Torontonian has numerous runner-up finishes in big events but will be looking to put all that behind him when he takes on chipleader Isaac Baron and the rest of the stacked final-table lineup Friday night.
Baron took command of the tournament late on Thursday, ending play with 6,715,000. Taylor Paur (4,270,000), Jacob Bazeley (3,920,000), Shooting Star Faraz Jaka (2,920,000), Mizzi (1,920,000), and Ravee Mathi (1,470,000) will try to catch Baron and claim the $1,214,200 top prize.
Of the two Canadians to enter the room on Day 3, only Mizzi Survived. WPT Champions Club member Shawn Buchanan was eliminated in 20th place earning $28,360. Other notables to fall were last woman standing Haixia Zhang (13th), Giacomo Fundaro (14th), Byron Kaverman (15th), Chris Moorman (18th), Toby Lewis (19th), Steve Brecher (27th), Garrett Greer (28th), and David Miscikowski (36th).
Final-table action will begin around 4 p.m. PT at the Bay 101 Casino in San Jose, California. Tune into WPT.com for live updates and rail Sorel Mizzi all the way to a WPT title. PokerNews Canada will bring you a full event recap once a champion has been crowned.
