Jason Ross Wins Record-Breaking DeepStacks Poker Tour in Edmonton

Jason Ross DSPT Edmonton

The second of four Canadian DeepStacks Poker Tour (DSPT) stops in 2015 has come to a close at Casino Yellowhead in Edmonton, Alberta after showing some unprecedented numbers.

With eight events on the schedule from April 16 to 27, the excitement peaked with the $1,100 Main Event with a guaranteed $200,000 prize pool. The guarantee was absolutely annihilated when 509 entries tipped the total purse to $480,550, promising $100,000 plus a $3,000 DSPT Championship package to the winner.

Only a few weeks earlier, DSPT Calgary set a new Albertan record for this series when 431 entries passed through registration at Grey Eagle Resort & Casino. But in the tradition of Calgary-Edmonton one-upmanship, Edmonton tipped well past that, setting a new standard and proving how incredible the growth of the game has been recently in the province.

When the Main Event got down to the final three players, they decided to chop up most of the remaining prize pool which saw Ian Alvarado and Richard Mullen secure $70,000 each and Jason Ross locked up $60,000. That left $8,310 and the $3,000 DSPT Championship package to play for.

Mullen was the first to go when he three-bet shoved with a ragged ace — {a-Clubs}{2-Hearts} — and was called by Alvarado with {7-Spades}{7-Clubs}. With no ace or wheel on the {9-Hearts}{3-Spades}{10-Spades}{6-Hearts}{5-Clubs} board, Mullen was eliminated.

Heads-up play began with Alvarado holding nearly a two-to-one chiplead over Ross, but that was flipped quickly when a board of {k-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{k-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{j-Clubs} saw both players hitting a strong hand on the river. All the chips went in the middle and Ross doubled up with his {k-Spades}{j-Spades} full house to Alvarado's {q-Hearts}{9-Clubs} for a straight.

The chips went in the middle again in the following hand with Ross shoving from the button with {k-Diamonds}{9-Spades} and Alvarado calling blind with {10-Spades}{3-Hearts}. Ross won the title when the board ran out {a-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}, earning the extra cash and Championship package.

Here are the final-table results:
