The Calgary poker scene is set to heat up again this summer, as the Deerfoot Inn & Casino Summer Super Stack kicks off today. Guaranteeing over $400,000 in prize money, the 12-day tournament series promises poker action hot enough to match the August heat.
Starting today, Deerfoot Inn & Casino in Calgary, Alberta is running super satellite tournaments. This innovative satellite format offers $1,100 in tournament dollars to one in seven runners. $200 super satellites run at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on August 5, as well as 7 p.m. on August 6.
The first of 14 events gets under way on Thursday with Day 1a of the $550 Mega Stack. Kicking the series off in high gear, the Mega Stack guarantees $100,00 in prizes, and there are three Day 1s for players to try their hand at a piece of that prize pool. Cards are in the air for Day 1a at 2 p.m. on August 6, while Days 1b and 1c begin at noon on August 7 and 8, respectively.
After the first event, the series just gets better. With bounty and heads-up events in both pot-limit Omaha and hold'em, as well as the ever-popular $220 Team Event and side events like the blackjack and baccarat tournaments, the next twelve days will be sizzling with action.
It all culminates with the $1,500 Super Stack Main Event. Cards are in the air for Day 1a of the Main Event at noon on August 14, so make sure you get your shot at the $200,000 guaranteed prize pool. Day 1b and 1c both run at noon on the following days, promising a huge field with the potential to crush the guarantee.
If Deerfoot's most recent series is any indication, this one will be another huge success. Guarantees were smashed and players raved about the great series at Winter Super Stack back in February. Ryan Hodge won the Main Event after a five-way deal, but World Series of Poker bracelet winner Tyler Bonkowski earned the most money, scooping up $49,000 in the deal for finishing second.
And just like last February, PokerNews Canada will be on site once again to bring you exclusive coverage of the Main Event with daily recaps of the action and live updates throughout the day on our live reporting page.
Deerfoot Inn & Casino are also sweetening the pot with some added value for all of their players once again. Everyone who finishes in the money in any of the 14 events will earn points depending on their finish, the size of the field, and the buy-in. The player with the most points accumulated by the end of the series will become the High Point Champion and win a $5,000 World Poker Tour (WPT) Montreal Main Event package for the upcoming prestigious WPT stop in Montreal. The added value should keep many more players around for the full 12-day series, ensuring full poker rooms throughout.
