The Weekly Review: McDonald is Best, Sunday Success, Two Upcoming Canadian Series, and More
There’s a lot to stay on top of if you want to follow the ever-changing poker industry in Canada, online, and around the world, so here’s the week in a nutshell — a recap of all of our major headlines from the past seven days to get you up to speed on all things poker.
Mike McDonald is Canada’s Best Tournament Player
As the calendar turned on a new year, Mike McDonald was ranked highest among Canadians in the Global Poker Index (GPI) 2015 Player of the Year points race, earning the title of Canada’s Player of the Year.
As we do every week, we reviewed Canada’s top-ranked players on the GPI which, of course, is currently led by McDonald. Daniel Negreanu has slid all the way to No. 8 in the country.

Announcing 2nd Annual GPI American Poker Awards
Nominations opened for the second annual GPI American Poker Awards this week with more than 50 people in the industry invited to the nomination panel. Over the next few weeks, they’ll be casting their votes to determine which four nominees are selected in the 11 different categories.
The awards show will return to the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills, California again this year on February 25 to celebrate the best of the North American poker world from 2015.
Canada Excels in the Sunday Majors
In the first Sunday of the month, Canadian players did exceptionally well to kick off the new year. The best result was ‘Bababooyofff’ who chopped PokerStars’ Sunday Million for $118,000. Shyam ‘G’s Zee’ Srinivasan won the Sunday 2nd Chance as well.
There was also a dominating Canadian presence on the final table of Full Tilt’s Sunday Brawl and Sunday Major, as well as 888poker’s The $120,000 Mega Deep and The $150,000 Whale.
Announcing TonyBet Winter Festival
TonyBet is coming to Canada to be the title sponsor of the Winter Festival at Playground Poker Club later this month in Quebec. The 13-tournament schedule has some great events lined up, including a $1,100 Main Event with $500,000 guaranteed. There is also word of open-face Chinese being a part of the series — the game TonyBet Poker is best known for.
$15 Million Guaranteed for TCOOP
The first online tournament series of 2016 on PokerStars was announced to have $15 million in guaranteed prizes. The Turbo Championship of Online Poker (TCOOP) will begin January 21 and run until the end of the month with 50 different tournaments.
There’s a huge range of poker variants on offer and the buy-ins range from just $7.50 to $2,100. The Main Event boasts the largest guarantee of all the events with a promised $2,000,000 to play for in the $700 tournament which will see first place earn a minimum of $300,000.
Winter Super Stack Returns
Deerfoot Inn & Casino announced the return of their popular annual Winter Super Stack series in Calgary, Alberta. This year, the schedule is made up of 15 tournaments including two $1,100 heads-up events, a $1,500 Main Event, and a $5,000 High Roller.
The series has collective guarantees of $330,000, but if past years are any indication, that will be far surpassed.
GVC Set to Take Over bwin.party
The struggling bwin.party were able to reassure their investors with Q4 revenue increasing four percent over the same period last year, and it would’ve been eight percent if not for the hike in the European Union’s VAT.
This comes just as GVC gets set to take over the company. The transition should be completed on February 1.
888poker is Headed to Austria
A winter adventure awaits those who wish to enjoy 888poker’s first live event of 2016. The online poker room announced 888Live Austria which will take place February 4-7 at an alpine wonderland. Innsbruck Igls — Patscherkofel is a world-class ski resort and will host the $400 888Live event with $50,000 guaranteed.
But it’s more than a poker tournament. There is great skiing and snowboarding, nightlife at the four-star Grauer Bar Hotel, stunning views, and anyone can win a full package to the event on 888poker.
