Davinder Jhutty Wins Again; Takes Down Spring Super Stack Main Event
The revived Spring Super Stack has come to a close with Davinder Jhutty winning the Main Event for $40,000.
This short series was vacant from the calendar last year but returned for 2016 with five tournaments across four days at Deerfoot Inn & Casino in Calgary, Alberta. Rejoining its big brothers — the Winter Super Stack and Summer Super Stack — the Spring incarnation featured a $1,100 Main Event with $150,000 guaranteed.
A total of 171 entries pushed the prize pool to $162,450.
Day 2 — the final day — resumed play on Sunday, April 17, with 30 players returning to the tables after earning their seat in one of the three Day 1s. Beginning the day with the most chips was Johnny Yu holding 401,500. That was well in front of second-best stack Leo Brouwer with 324,500.
With 17 players set to earn a payout, it took less than two hours to burst the money bubble when Angie Gelinas got the worst of it in a series of hands. With an average-sized stack, she called the three-bet jam of an opponent holding while she had . The ace on the flop was great for her, and the seemed favourable too, except it allowed the river to complete her opponent’s straight, leaving her with a very short stack. She was all in the next hand with with half the table seeing the flop. By the river, she was no good against the flush made by the winning player and she was the 18th-place finisher.
It didn’t take more than a couple more hours to see just nine players remaining to make up the final table. With all of the action streamed live on Twitch, the players gathered under the camera to battle for the $40,000 first-place prize.
The start-of-day chip leader, Johnny Yu, carried his advantage all the way to heads-up play where he faced Davinder Jhutty. When the two began their faceoff, Yu held the chip lead but, just a couple of hands later, Jhutty evened things up with a three-bet preflop, a bet on the turn, and the best hand at showdown.
A few hands later, both players piled in all their chips preflop with Yu holding to Jhutty’s and the higher pair held, eliminating Yu in second place for $29,000 and giving Jhutty the $40,000 win.
Incredibly, this is the second time in two months that Jhutty has won a tournament in the very same room for the same amount of money. In February’s Winter Super Stack, Jhutty won Event #1 for $40,000 as well.
