Grey Eagle Introduces Western Canada Poker Open with $150,000-Guaranteed Main Event
Grey Eagle Resort & Casino has already established their reputation by being a favourite host of DeepStacks Poker Tour, but the renowned venue is now hosting their own tournament series. The Western Canada Poker Open is scheduled to run from May 6 to 14.
Located in Calgary, Alberta, on the Tsuutina Nation, Grey Eagle is one of the city’s finest casinos. Their recently completed state-of-the-art events centre adds a venue for great concerts and also houses large poker tournaments like the one scheduled for early May. With their attached hotel now on site as well, there’s a classy and affordable place to stay for out-of-towners as well.
Action will kick off on Friday, May 6, with Day 1a of the $550 Event #1. There will be two Day 1s followed by a final Day 2 on Sunday and the prize pool is guaranteed at $75,000. Players will receive a generous 20,000 chips and 40-minute blind levels.
The headlining tournament of the nine-event series is the $1,100 Main Event with $150,000 guaranteed in the prize pool. It also features to Day 1s with the first to be held on Thursday, May 12, followed by another on lucky Friday the 13th. Survivors will return for Day 2 to play down to a winner on Saturday. The Main Event also has 40-minute blind levels but gives a larger stack of 25,000 chips.
Of the other tournaments on the schedule, buy-ins range from $200 to $440 and formats include turbos, bounties, and pot-limit Omaha. There are also satellites running throughout to give players a chance to earn their ticket for a lower price.

There will also be a points race with players earning points in each event they cash. The player who accumulates the most points throughout the series will win a generous package for the DeepStacks Poker Tour Championship running at Grey Eagle in late November into December. The package includes a $2,500 entry to the Main Event, a $550 seat to a side event, a $330 seat to a side event, and a 12-night stay during the series at the Grey Eagle hotel. The runner-up in the points race will also get a $2,500 Main Event seat and a five-night stay in the hotel.
