Canada's Success in PokerStars' 2016 SCOOP; Shawn Buchanan Wins Three Events
The richest online poker tournament series of all time has come to a close and Canada-based players were on the receiving end of more than $10 million in prizes!
PokerStars’ 2016 Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) offered an incredible 168 tournaments through the two-week series and a record-setting total of $90,984,283.44 was awarded to players around the world.
Each of the 56 events carried three tiers of tournaments with low, medium, and high buy-ins with most of them lasting multiple days.
The most prestigious of them all was the 2016 SCOOP Main Event (High) with a buy-in of $10,000. With 824 entries, the prize pool sat at a hair over $8 million and the U.K.’s Talal Shakerchi won the top prize of $1,468,000.88.
The only Canadian flag at the Main Event final table was waved by American Scott Seiver who was playing within our borders. He collected $596,000.13 for fourth place. The deepest run by a true Canadian was Sam “Str8$$$Homey” Greenwood who finished in 10th place for $88,000.01.
This year, the U.K. surpassed Canada for being the country with the most money won across the series. They beat us Canucks by a narrow margin of $76,391.07, which is as close to a tie as you’re likely to see, considering third-place money winners Brazil were a full $4,176,650.15 behind the Canadian tally.
The most cashes of the series were earned by players in Russia with 8,642, followed by Brazil, U.K., Germany, and then Canada down in fifth place, which is a testament to how much larger the average Canadian result was compared to other countries. Canada also fielded the fifth-most entries to tournaments with 43,454, beat by Brazil, the U.K., Germany, and Russia with the most at 61,154.
The U.K. picked up the most final tables in the series with 123 and Canada came a close second with 117. And Brazil and the U.K. both had more wins than Canada with 21 and 20, respectively. Players in Canada won 14 tournaments.
When it comes to individual player success, two Canadians topped the charts. Nobody won more events than Shawn “buck21” Buchanan who, incredibly, won three events in the series. The second-most wins was a three-way tie between the players who won two events, and one of those was Canadian Mike “goleafsgoeh” Leah.
