GPL's Montreal Nationals Week 12: Liu Gets Swept but Still Extend League Lead
A dozen weeks of action are in the bag. Week 12 of the inaugural season of the Global Poker League played out online this week with the sole Canadian team still dominating the competition.
Marc-Andre Ladouceur is the team manager of the Montreal Nationals and he steered them to another six points to bring the season tally up to 187, leading not just the Americas conference but the entire league. They’ve expanded their lead over second-best team L.A. Sunset who now has 176.
Montreal Nationals Week 12 6-Max
As usual, the week started on Tuesday with two six-max matches between the six teams in the Americas conference. Mike “Timex” McDonald took the seat for the Montreal Nationals and found a runner-up finish against San Franciso Rush’s Anton Wigg for five points.
Heads-up play ended with both players being dealt an ace and getting it in preflop with Wigg holding to McDonald’s . It’s not often the sweat is dead on the flop, but it was this time as Wigg found trips with the and McDonald was eliminated in second place for five points, giving Wigg the win and seven points.
McDonald had less luck in the second match, only outlasting one opponent before meeting his end in fifth place for one point. He was dealt in the small blind and Darren Elias raised to 3,300 from the button. McDonald pushed all in with his 12,015 chips and Elias called, flipping over .
In another nightmare flop for McDonald, he was immediately drawing dead. Elias made a straight and was drawing to a straight flush with the flop. McDonald settled for a single point in fifth place and the match ended with Anton Wigg finding a second consecutive win for another seven points.
Montreal Nationals Week 12 Heads-Up
Two days later, the Montreal Nationals were back at the tables for head-to-head action against the New York Rounders. The Canadians selected Xuan Liu to face Jason Wheeler in a series of three rounds of heads-up play.
They were long matches but they ended poorly for the Nats. Wheeler swept all three for a total of nine points, leaving Liu empty-handed. They took 41, 51, and then 44 hands to be decided, but each went to the Rounders.
The first round ended when a short-stacked Liu got it all in preflop with to Wheeler’s . The board bricked for both of them and Wheeler’s ace won the pot and the three points.
Liu got it all in preflop behind in the next round too with against and the flop of left her drawing thin. The turn of and river of were no help and Wheeler collected another three points.
In the third round, she pushed the last of her chips in with and ran into the monster hand of held by Wheeler. The board came queen high and Wheeler completed his sweep.
GPL Week 13
