  • Dave Desanghere topped a sold-out field at the 2016 Harvest Poker Classic!

The 20th annual Harvest Poker Classic got underway in Saskatchewan's capital at Casino Regina on Wednesday. The four-day, four-tournament series kicked off with the $500 event in the casino's beautiful show lounge, converted into a large tournament room.

With the room at capacity with 210 seats filled, registration closed after the first four levels with a few early eliminations being filled by more entries, taking the total up to 225. The prize pool came in at $101,250.

By mid evening, Aidan Tiefenbach emerged as a substantial chip leader before the tournament was even in the money. He held onto that position almost all night, powering his way through the field.

The money bubble burst with the elimination of Leor Wasserman and the remaining 23 players were guaranteed to earn a payout. Some familiar faces like Dusty Speta (23rd — $1,123), Chris Bowers (22nd — $1,123), and Russ Meilunas (14th — $1,425) fell before the final table of 10 was set.

Coming to the final table, Aidan Tiefenbach was still leading the field with 695,000 chips which was miles ahead of the second-best stack of 283,000 belonging to Chad Wilkinson.

Chelsey Desjarlais was the first player to be eliminated in an unfortunate clash of two evenly matched hands. Desjarlais and Tiefenbach both turned over ace-king suited in a big all-in preflop pot. But by the time the board ran out, Tiefenbach's hearts had made a flush and Desjarlais was eliminated for $2,107.

Terry Shulko's run came to an end in a blind-on-blind battle where he pushed all in with {a-Clubs}{9a} and ran into the {a-Spades}{j-Spades} of Trevor Norlander. The jack hit the turn, leaving Shulko drawing dead, and he collected $4,442 for sixth place.

It wasn't until play was three-handed that Aidan Tiefenbach finally relinquished the chip lead. He tried to bluff Dave Desanghere off a big pot on a paired board but couldn't get his opponent to fold trips. The heap was added to Desanghere's stack and he took over the lead.

With the elimination of Chad Wilkinson in third place when he ran {a-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} into Tiefenbach's {a-Spades}{q-Hearts}, heads-up play began with a chop and with Tiefenbach once again holding the chip lead.

But just a few hands into the battle, Desanghere had regained the lead and called a big preflop shove with {a-Diamonds}{j-Clubs} against Tiefenbach's {k-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}. The board ran in favour of Desanghere and the tournament ended with him holding the winner's ring and earning $22,070.
