Trevor Norlander Wins Winter Super Stack Kickoff Event for $38,000

Trevor Norlander Winter Super Stack Deerfoot Inn & Casino

Trevor Norlander has won the kickoff event of the 2017 Winter Super Stack, pocketing $38,000 to take to his home province of Saskatchewan.

The two-day $550 Mega Stack with three starting flights is the traditional first tournament of Deerfoot Inn & Casino’s Super Stack series in Calgary. It began on Thursday and wrapped up Sunday evening when the last of the $168,150 prize pool was awarded.

By the time registration closed on Day 1c, a total of 354 entries were tallied. Just the top 36 advanced to Day 2 to be in the money with Doug Mcginnis leading the field with a huge stack of 749,000 chips. Behind him was Sunny Lubana with 616,000 and Ron Giles rounded out the top three with 574,000.

Mcginnis managed to use his advantage to take him as far as fourth place where he was eliminated for $12,900. Lubana wasn’t as fortunate, meeting his end in 14th place for $1,990. Giles made the final table and collected $4,450 in eighth place.

Norlander started Day 2 with a respectable count of 302,000 chips and carried that to the final table. He was responsible for the majority of the eliminations there and built a commanding stack.

The first mention of a prize pool chop came when play was five-handed, but a deal couldn't be reached and they played on. Then, during a break when they were four-handed, talks emerged again and the numbers were crunched, but an agreement couldn't be made and they kept the prizes in place.

Shortly after that, Doug Mcginnis three-bet pushed all in with {6-Diamonds}{6-Hearts} and lost a race against Trevor Norlander’s {k-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}, finding his tournament ending in fourth place.

Andrew Kim was the next out when he put in the last of his short stack in blind-on-blind action with {q-Diamonds}{4-Spades} and Norlander made the call with {k-Hearts}{6-Spades}, winning the pot when the flop brought both a queen and a king. He earned $17,000 for third place.

That put Trevor Norlander and Michael Smith heads up with Norlander holding an enormous chip lead and Smith needing to make up a lot of ground. About 10.5 hours into Sunday’s play, the final hand was dealt when Norlander limped {k-Hearts}{q-Hearts} and Smith pushed all in with {j-Clubs}{j-Spades}. A queen hit the flop and Smith never caught up, finding himself collecting $23,500 for finishing runner-up.
