The Canadian Sunday Briefing: Fifth in Sunday Million For "carinokid"
Every Sunday, millions of dollars are paid out to poker players around the world when sites like 888poker, PokerStars, and partypoker host the week’s biggest and best online tournaments. Each week, we take a look at how players from Canada fared in the Sunday majors.
This Sunday, August 20, 2017, the big Canadian winner was “carinokid” who finished fifth in PokerStars’ Sunday Million for $55K. Another impressive result was “WWWpartyCOM” who final-tabled one partypoker Sunday major and won another. Here’s a full report on major Canadian results this Sunday:
Sunday Majors on 888poker
The $80,000 Mega Deep
The premier Sunday tournament on 888poker boasts a guarantee of $80,000 for a $215 buy-in. This week, the guarantee was missed by nearly $5,000 with 377 players taking part.
No Canadians made the final table of eight players. The U.K.’s “icallyamet” was the winner, earning $13,592.01 after a heads-up deal.
The $100,000 Whale
The Whale is 888poker’s high-roller tournament of the day with a buy-in of $1,050 along with a $100,000 guarantee. There were 72 players this week and 32 rebuys, creating a prize pool of $104,000.
Of the final nine players, two of them were from Canada. The first out was “INEEDPANTS” in eighth place for $4,160. The other was “SHIPITBITCH” who managed fourth place for $10,400. The winner was Russian “EvnomiYa” for $31,200.
Sunday Majors on PokerStars
The biggest tournaments of the day get started on PokerStars every week with the $109 Sunday Kickoff with a $75,000 prize pool guarantee. With 982 entries, the guarantee was beat by more than $20,000.
It came to an end with no Canadians at the final table, which isn’t uncommon given the early start time in Canadian time zones (8 a.m. ET). The winner was Russian “kawachi1984” for $15,760.16.
The $215 Sunday Warm-Up heats up the action with a $275,000 guarantee. With 1,249 players, the guarantee was missed by about $5,000.
Of the final nine players, none were from Canada. The winner was Lithuania’s “SpaceBonyiga” for $42,866.68.
The $700 Super-Sized Sunday is a progressive knockout tournament with half the buy-in going to the player’s bounty. A total of 471 entries beat the $300,000 guarantee by just over $13,000, which is far less than this tournament usually sees.
There were no Canadians at this final table either. The winner was “playboy99999” from Germany for over $60,000 with prize pool winnings and bounties combined.
Moving on to the lowest-priced tournament that could be considered a Sunday major, the $11 Sunday Storm is the best value you’ll find in online poker. Despite the tiny buy-in, the prize pool is set at a guaranteed $250,000. This week, the buy-in actually dropped to just $5.50 for a half-priced special edition, with the guarantee remaining the same. With 65,850 entries, the prize pool still came to an incredible $329,250.
One player from Canada was among the final nine: “loosenewf” actually went all the way to negotiate a three-way deal before being eliminated in second place for $19,365.60. The winner was Germany’s “Cashkiller77” for $28,000.
The most jaw-dropping tournament in online poker is the only one that guarantees a million dollars in prizes every week. This tournament was also a half-priced special edition with the buy-in dropping to $107.50 but the guarantee staying the same. This time around, 20,540 entries created a guarantee-smashing prize pool of $2,054,000.
The win went to Uruguay this week. “Mdf92” found $212,109.80 for the win. Canada-based “carinokid” finished fifth for $54,762.31.
Mini Sunday Million
Giving the Sunday Million feel for a smaller buy-in is the weekly Mini Sunday Million where the entry is just $22 and $150,000 is guaranteed. With 9,925 entries this week, the prize pool came to $198,500.
A German going by “MastaManson” won the event for $25,395.81 after a heads-up deal. Canada’s “Brentyyy” collected fourth-place money of $8,773.22.
Sunday Grand (NLHE)
The most expensive weekly tournaments on PokerStars’ regular Sunday schedule are the two $1,050 Sunday Grand events. There are two editions of the tournament with both starting at the same time. The first guarantees $150,000 and is a no-limit hold’em tournament. With 169 entries this week, the guarantee was beat by $19,000.
The final table saw no Canadian flags waving. Malta-based “AllLoot4Me” was the winner, earning $34,026.08.
Sunday Grand (PLO)
The second edition of the $1,050 Sunday Grand is a six-max pot-limit Omaha tournament with $75,000 guaranteed. This week, 83 entries beat the guarantee by $8,000.
Of the final six players, one was Canadian. Ami “UhhMee” Barer finished third for $12,092, beating his fourth-place finish last week by one notch. The winner was Latvia’s “ekziter” for $22,402.53.
The buy-in drops to $109 for the Sunday Cooldown and the pace goes up with the turbo structure in the $100,000-guaranteed tournament. A total of 1,229 entries beat the guarantee by over $20,000.
At the final table, Brazil’s “soldado310” was the winner for $19,422.60 after a five-way deal. Canada’s “Whisky2016” finished seventh for $2,836.82.
The Sunday majors conclude on PokerStars with the $215 Sunday Supersonic — a six-max hyper-speed tournament with a $125,000 guarantee. In a little over two and a half hours, 803 players were reduced to one.
There were no Canadians among the final six players. The winner was Argentina’s “maxyshark” for $27,518.67.
