The Sunday Briefing: Sixth in Sunday Million Tops Canadian Scores

The Canadian Sunday Briefing

Every Sunday, millions of dollars are paid out to poker players around the world when sites like 888poker, PokerStars, and partypoker host the week’s biggest and best online tournaments. Each week, we take a look at how players from Canada fared in the Sunday majors.

This Sunday, August 13, 2017, a final-table appearance in the Sunday Million was Canada’s top score, while a win on partypoker and a heads-up chop on 888poker were among other big results. Here’s a full report on major Canadian results this Sunday:

Sunday Majors on 888poker

The $100,000 Mega Deep

The premier Sunday tournament on 888poker boasts a guarantee of $100,000 for a $215 buy-in. This week, the guarantee was just missed by the 492 players.

No Canadians made the final table of eight players. “Odyseus58” from Germany was the winner, earning $19,000.

The $100,000 Baby Whale

The Baby Whale is 888poker’s high-roller tournament of the day with a buy-in of $320 along with a $100,000 guarantee. There were 253 players this week and 127 rebuys, creating a prize pool of $114,000.

Of the final nine players, a full one-third of them were from Canada. The first out was “sstringg” in eighth place for $2,850. The other two were still in contention with just three players remaining, but then “McNugget123” fell in third for $12,882 before “SHIPITBITCH” claimed second place after a heads-up deal, though his $20,567.54 in prize money was more than what Germany’s “polarizedOMG” received for the win.

Sunday Majors on PokerStars

Sunday Kickoff

The biggest tournaments of the day get started on PokerStars every week with the $109 Sunday Kickoff with a $75,000 prize pool guarantee. With 1,107 entries, the guarantee was beat by more than $35,000.

It came to an end with no Canadians at the final table, which isn’t uncommon given the early start time in Canadian time zones (8 a.m. ET). The winner was Russian “Abziikzn” for $18,057.95.

Sunday Warm-Up

The $215 Sunday Warm-Up heats up the action with a $275,000 guarantee. With 1,539 players, there was more than $30,000 more than the guarantee to play for.

Of the final nine players, none were from Canada. The winner was Finland’s “elmerixx” for $46,983.22.

Super-Sized Sunday

The $700 Super-Sized Sunday is a progressive knockout tournament with half the buy-in going to the player’s bounty. A total of 632 entries beat the $300,000 guarantee by over $120,000.

There were no Canadians at this final table either. The winner was “heyalisson” from Brazil for about $70,000 with prize pool winnings and bounties combined.

Sunday Storm

Moving on to the lowest-priced tournament that could be considered a Sunday major, the $11 Sunday Storm is the best value you’ll find in online poker. Despite the tiny buy-in, the prize pool is set at a guaranteed $250,000. This week, the buy-in actually dropped to just $5.50 for a half-priced special edition, with the guarantee remaining the same. With 64,590 entries, the prize pool still came to an incredible $322,950.

One player from Canada was among the final nine: “awcca” who finished eighth for $2,693.62. The winner was Poland’s “dekaer” for $28,542.73 after a heads-up deal.

Sunday Million

The most jaw-dropping tournament in online poker is the only one that guarantees a million dollars in prizes every week. This tournament was also a half-priced special edition with the buy-in dropping to $107.50 but the guarantee staying the same. This time around, 22,292 entries created a guarantee-smashing prize pool of $1,229,200.

After the Canadian flag waved in first place for two weeks in a row, the win went to Germany this week. “Tomati25” found $228,754.61 for the win. Canada-based “Rass777” finished sixth for $42,100.44.

Mini Sunday Million

Giving the Sunday Million feel for a smaller buy-in is the weekly Mini Sunday Million where the entry is just $22 and $150,000 is guaranteed. With a massive 10,267 entries this week, the prize pool came to $205,340.

The final table saw no Canadians with chips. A Greek going by “betpeter3” won the event for $22,334 after a heads-up deal.

Sunday Grand (NLHE)

The most expensive weekly tournaments on PokerStars’ regular Sunday schedule are the two $1,050 Sunday Grand events. There are two editions of the tournament with both starting at the same time. The first guarantees $150,000 and is a no-limit hold’em tournament. With 231 entries this week, the guarantee was beat by $81,000.

The final table saw two Canadian flags waving. American expat Jon “apestyles” Van Fleet collected $10,471.02 from within our borders, and “shorezydrew” found fourth place for $18,759.78. The winner was Switzerland’s “th’Kick” for $44,987.17.

Sunday Grand (PLO)

The second edition of the $1,050 Sunday Grand is a six-max pot-limit Omaha tournament with $75,000 guaranteed. This week, 126 entries beat the guarantee by $51,000.

Of the final six players, one was Canadian. Ami “UhhMee” Barer finished fourth for $11,901.88. The winner was Cyprus-based “anti-durr” for $28,326.15.

Sunday Cooldown

The buy-in drops to $109 for the Sunday Cooldown and the pace goes up with the turbo structure in the $100,000-guaranteed tournament. A total of 1,490 entries smashed the guarantee by nearly $50,000.

At the final table, Russia’s “SBGstyle” was the winner for $17,390.17 after a five-way deal. No Canadians were among the final nine.

Sunday Supersonic

The Sunday majors conclude on PokerStars with the $215 Sunday Supersonic — a six-max hyper-speed tournament with a $125,000 guarantee. In just over two and a half hours, 981 players were reduced to one.

There were no Canadians among the final six players. The winner was Vietnam’s “TranBrothers” for $32,823.93.
