Winter Super Stack Heats Up February in Calgary
While the temperatures are cold in Calgary this time of year, the poker action is hot at Deerfoot Inn & Casino as the Winter Super Stack tournament series kicks off with 13 events scheduled over two weeks.
Tournaments range from the $50 NLH Rapid Fire Rebuy event (with $20 rebuys) through the marquee $1,500 Main Event. Poker formats include no-limit hold'em and pot-limit Omaha tournaments, as well as a mixed game and a seniors event.
The first event on the schedule is the $550 Mega Stack event. Players start with 25,000 chips and play 40-minute levels starting with three Day 1s on February 1, 2, and 3, leading into the final Day 2 on Sunday, February 4. The 2017 edition of the Mega Stack saw Trevor Norlander sitting with all the chips at the end of Day 2 for a payday worth $38,000.
The series gets into full swing on Friday, February 2. In addition to Day 1b of the Mega Stack, Friday's schedule features the mixed-game tournament (no-limit hold'em, pot-limit Omaha, stud, and stud hi-lo), as well as the first chance for players to qualify for a seat at the $5,300 North American Millions in late February at Playground Poker Club just outside Montreal. $200 Step 1 tournaments for the Millions run on Friday and Sunday, with a $1,100 Step 2 running Sunday, February 11.
The rest of the week is chock-full of poker action. Monday evening features the pot-limit Omaha tournament, but PLO players looking to scratch their bounty itch can jump into a $220 PLO bounty event on Saturday evening. Older players can mark Thursday noon on their calendar for the seniors' event — a $330 buy-in where players get 20,000 chips with 20-minute levels. And one of the most fun tournaments of the year, the team event, runs on the evening of Saturday, February 10.
One of the new additions to the schedule this year is a third event with three Day 1s: the Deepstack. Priced at $330, it's an affordable option for a multi-day tournament. Day 1s run Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at 2 p.m. with the final Day 2 getting cards in the air at noon on Thursday.
Everything leads up to the Main Event with a $1,500 buy in. Starting with 30,000 chips, players play 45-minute levels through three Day 1s. Remaining players from each of the Day 1s reconvene Monday, February 12, for Day 2 when the structure changes to 60-minute blind levels.
In addition to all the tournament action, Deerfoot Inn & Casino will run a High Point Champion contest tied to player results, and this year the High Point Champion will receive a $5,300 seat to the North America Millions. In addition to the seat given to High Point Champion, an additional seat will be raffled off to one lucky player from all the registered entries in any series event worth more than $220 (seniors' event excluded and team event credited at 50%).
Satellites for the series start on Wednesday, January 31, for $220, and the full action gets started on February 1. Head over to the Deerfoot Inn & Casino in Calgary to see if you can build a stack at the 2018 Winter Super Stack poker series.
