Chip and a Chair: Greenwood Takes High Roller in Barcelona
Casino Barcelona is playing host to the partypoker MILLIONS Grand Final Barcelona from April 7 through April 15, and Canadian Sam Greenwood is continuing his hot run in the newly minted Millions live tour.
Greenwood came to Barcelona with more cashes than any other player on the partypoker LIVE MILLIONS Season 1 leaderboard, representing more than $1.3 million before he rolled into Casino Barcelona.
The fourth event of the Barcelona Millions stop was the €50K Super High Roller and a total of 57 players were able to scrape together the €51,000 entry fee. Day 1 of the event forced 50 people out of the tournament before chips were bagged for the night with just seven players, all expecting to cash, remaining in play.
Bubble play extended for quite awhile at the end of Day 1, leaving several players very short coming into Day 2. The shortest of those was Canadian Sam Greenwood, who was down to just 600,000 chips when blinds were at 250,000/500,000. He managed to rally that tiny stack into a couple of double-ups, and suddenly found himself heads up against Sergio Aido.
With just 30 big blinds between them at heads up, Greenwood admitted that it came down to the cards as much as the play. "I just had the best hand most of the time on the river, so that was easy."
Greenwood, the most successful member of Canada's first family of poker (brothers Max and Lucas have nearly $4,000,000 in cashes between them), solidified his hold on sixth place on Canada's all-time money list with the win. The €1,000,000 prize (which converts to CD$1,556,260 or US$1,227,792) brought Greenwood's lifetime cashes to over $9,000,000 and represents Greenwood's single largest lifetime cash.
The win came after a red hot trip to Punta Cana for the first stop of the partypoker LIVE MILLIONS Season 1, where he won the main event for a cool $1,000,000 after cashing for second- and third-place money in two of the other three events of the series, both high rollers. Greenwood is no stranger to the high buy-in events, playing high rollers at stops all over the world. After taking down the €50K, Greenwood said he planned to take a quick break to refresh before jumping into the €100K, already in progress as he was bagging up his cash from the €50K.
The 2018 partypoker LIVE MILLIONS Grand Final continues at Casino Barcelona through April 15, with Day 1s for the Main Event running on Apr 11 and 12. Follow the action live at PokerNews.
